How to Install a Toilet (Beginner Guide)

Installing a toilet is not a simple job. But after reading our tutorial,you can save the cost of hiring a plumber when replacing your toilet.
Clean up the bathroom floor and lay towels to catch spilled water. Get all tools and parts ready. Always prepare a new wax ring — it’s the key to stop leaks and odors.
• Tools: Putty knife, wrench, level, caulk gun, rags, bucket, gloves
• Materials: New toilet, wax ring, bathroom silicone caulk, bolts & washers
Shut off the water and flush to drain all water. Disconnect the water line, take off base nuts, then lift the old toilet out.
Step 2: Clean the Floor Flange
Stuff a rag in the drain to block falling debris. Scrape off all old wax, dirt and rust on the flange, then wipe it dry and clean.
Make sure the flange is solid, flat and fixed tightly. Fix or replace it if it’s broken, loose or rusty to avoid future leaks.
Step 4: Install New Flange Bolts
Insert new bolts into the flange slots. Adjust them straight and parallel to the back wall for precise alignment.
Step 5: Attach Wax Ring to Toilet Base
Lay the toilet upside down on a towel. Stick the new wax ring centered on the bottom drain port and press it tight.
Step 6: Set the Toilet on Flange
Flip the toilet right side up. Line up the base holes with the bolts, then set it down slowly (do not drag).
Step 7: Press & Seal the Wax Ring
Press down hard on the toilet, or sit on it for 1 minute. This flattens the wax ring fully to block leaks and sewer smell.
Put washers on the bolts and tighten nuts by hand (do not over-tighten!). Cover bolts with plastic caps for a clean look.
Step 9: Install the Toilet Tank
Place the tank on the bowl, install the inner bolts and gaskets, then hand-tighten to hold the tank steady.
Step 10: Connect Water & Check Leaks
Hook up the water supply line, turn on the water, and wait a few minutes to check all connections for leaks.
Place the seat and lid on the toilet, fix with plastic bolts, and make sure it opens and closes smoothly.
Flush the toilet to confirm no leaks. Apply silicone caulk around the base gap. Let it cure 24 hours before normal use.
